Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Special Olympics Turkey and the Ministry of Family and Social Policy have agreed to a partnership to reach more children with and without intellectual disabilities who live in orphanages and involve them in sports activities.
On 17-18 November 2016, Special Olympics athletes from the İstanbul regions competed in regional games in İstanbul, Turkey.
On 3-4 November 2016, 208 Special Olympics athletes from seven cities in the Marmara region competed in regional games in Kocaeli, Turkey. The Games were organized in collaboration with Kocaeli University.
Special Olympics Turkey successfully implemented the expansion of the Special Olympics Unified Recreation model in 10 cities as part of the Dilek Sabancı Unified Football Project.
