Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Those activities give them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

Under the “Play Unified” theme, over 150 Young Athletes, unified athletes, unified partners, coaches, volunteers, journalists and family members from the city of Blantyre, in the southern region of Malawi, came together to celebrate EKS Day.
As Special Olympics athletes, they are a shining example both in building their own family, and spreading their message of inclusion in Special Olympics Malawi projects.

Special Olympics Malawi celebrated EKS Day under the banner, “Let’s Change the Game.” In her remarks, Athletics Association of Malawi Vice Secretary Ireen Luka appealed to parents and guardians, saying, “I urge parents with children with intellectual disabilities to send them to nearest schools, not hide them in their homes."
As a legacy of the 2014 African Leaders Forum on Disability, Special Olympics, together with the Lions Clubs International Foundation, conducted a national Opening Eyes training seminar to strengthen professional knowledge and practice in providing quality vision care to people with ID.
Families in three major areas of Malawi will receive water transport and water security supplies as part of a new partnership between the government of Malawi, Special Olympics Malawi and PackH2O.
