According to statistics from Parkinson's UK, there are around 145,000 people living with Parkinson's Disease in the UK and 5-10% of people who live in care homes have the neurological condition.*

Parkinson's Disease is a neurological condition that causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time. There are three main symptoms of Parkinson's Disease which are a tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement, but other symptoms can be experienced. Medication is important for management of symptoms and can particularly affect person's risk of falling, Parkinson's Disease medication must be given at very specific times and can reduce freezing as well as reduce someone's risk of falls.

Through our webinar we are aiming to provide detailed information for healthcare workers caring for people with Parkinson's Disease including symptoms, management, medication and current research.

The session will be developed and led by Jacqui Chamberlain, Parkinson's Disease Nurse Specialist, St Austell Community Hospital.

Detailed content for this session is being developed and can be tailored to the needs of the organisations who wish to attend. We plan to include the following:

  • Overview of Parkinson's Disease - including motor and non-motor symptoms
  • Management pathway of Parkinson's Disease exacerbation
  • A case study that will discuss a patient with an infection and the impact it will have on Parkinson's Disease
  • Parkinson's Disease Medication
  • Current Research for Parkinson's Disease

This session provides information on similarities and differences between Lewy body disease, Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson’s dementia and offers practical tips for family carers.

Dementia Australia's facilitators have specialist dementia knowledge, skills and experience. These sessions are delivered interactively, you will be encouraged to share your experiences alongside other participants giving you an opportunity to develop new support networks.

Suitable for: People living with dementia and their family carers and family members. This program is not suitable for professionals employed in the health or aged care sectors.

A fun and supportive "virtual" song circle to practice projection, voice control and coordination through the joy of singing! Each session will start with a practice vocal warm-up and then sing your favorite songs with guitar accompaniment.

Note: After registering, you will receive a Zoom (video conference system) invite to your email that will allow you to connect the 1st and 3rd Thursday from 2:00 - 3:30p each month.

Instructors:

Michelle Garratt’s vocal background includes 10 years of choirs, 8 years of professional band performance, and college level vocal training in addition to teaching voice and movement for 10 years. Michelle continues to sing and teach since her own diagnosis of PD because she knows the importance of keeping the joy of music alive while exercising her vocal cords. Michelle had the privilege of learning some wonderful teaching techniques specific to people with PD this year from Judi Spencer at the World Parkinson’s Congress in Kyoto, Japan. Michelle encourages us to make a joyful noise.

Kera Magarill is trained in classical cello, music therapy and improvisational singing and she loves community music-making. She has led “Choir for the Tone Deaf”, a program for community singing for the Denver Public Libraries and she was the creative director for “The Dementors: An Alzheimer’s Association Band”. She currently works for Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services in Older Adult Behavioral Health and is deeply interested in the relationship between music and mood.

Be Heard Loud and Clear: Maintaining Effective Communication with Parkinson’s

Speech Pathologist Lisa Schmierer will discuss how early intervention from Speech Pathology can help you maintain clear and effective communication for longer periods. This session will cover the range of evidence-based speech pathology interventions available for people with Parkinson’s, including LSVT Loud. Lisa will discuss the importance of clear and effective communication in the workplace, as well as at home and with family and friends. Lisa will also touch on management of other symptoms, such as safe swallowing, language, facial expression and cognitive communication. Lisa Schmierer is the Speech Pathology Clinical Educator for Canberra Health Services.

While Parkinson’s disease is the most common form of parkinsonism, there are other disorders which share similar characteristics called the Parkinson’s Plus disorders or atypical parkinsonism.  These conditions are Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), Multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Corticobasal syndrome (CBS).  Dr. O'Leary will summarize information about these disorders and discuss potential treatments.

Joanna O'Leary, M.D., focuses on movement disorders and general neurology. She earned her medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, Ill., and completed her internship, residency and fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. Dr. O'Leary became a neurologist to work with patients who have challenging diseases. She also enjoys working with a large number of general neurology patients.

In this course, we apply our Neurophysiology knowledge to the populations who suffer from spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. We look at what happens to the nervous system when things go wrong and how this affects movement. You leave able to design exercise programs that help these special populations enhance their movement potential.

Learning objectives

  • Gain a basic understanding of neurophysiology with respect to neurological impairments, such as spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
  • Learn verbal and non-verbal cueing techniques to promote change in the movement patterns for individuals with neurological impairments

The Cedars-Sinai Movement Disorders Program is gathering the community during Parkinson's Awareness Month to share the latest in scientific understanding of the progressive brain disorder. Our medical team will tackle both established and breakthrough Parkinson's treatments, including surgery and the full gamut of multidisciplinary care from physical and speech therapy to behavioral therapy. Dance classes for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease provide an enjoyable, creative and safe environment for participants, their care partners, family and friends. Based on the Dance for PD® program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group, this class is appropriate for anyone with PD, no matter how advanced. No dance experience is required. In chairs, at a barre or standing, participants will explore elements of modern dance, ballet, folk and social dancing in a non-pressured, stimulating, and creative environment.
