Postpartum mood disorders effects more families than we care to talk about. But we need to talk about it before things get difficult. Let's talk about how this illness also effects men.

Sunday, July 25, 2021 at 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM CDT

Learning Objectives:

• Gain a basic understanding of the spectrum of mood and anxiety disorders experienced in pregnancy and the postpartum period.

• Learn the appropriate diagnostic tools for PMADs

• Differentiate the necessary treatment modalities for PMADs based on diagnosis, social factors, and safety.

Summary:

While we as clinicians are often taught a basic understanding of Postpartum Depression, our education leaves out a breadth of challenges experienced by people during and after pregnancy. This course will review the newer, more accurate, terminology – Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). PMADs include but are not limited to Perinatal Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, OCD, and Psychosis. We will also go over each of these disorders from likely onset to presenting symptoms and treatment protocol. By the end of the course, you should feel confident in using screening tools, advocating for your perinatal clients amongst your interdisciplinary team, and know how to stay abreast of the latest research in treating PMADs in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Stress during pregnancy increases risk of mood disorders for female offspring

Sad Depressed Depression Sadness Young Person

A new study found that women who are stressed during pregnancy experience a higher level of cortisol and this appears to cause a higher risk of anxiety and depression in their female infants under the age of 2.

Measures of cortisol levels were taken at different stages of pregnancy among 70 women.

Scientists then took images of brain connection in the newborn babies before external factors could influence their brains.

The same increased risk was not present in male babies.

The research indicates that cortisol seems to change the brain in the fetus and that a susceptibility for anxiety and mood problems can begin at birth in females.

It is known that many disorders affecting mood are more prevalent in women than men... 2 times as many. Source.
