Disabled people’s right to live independently as part of the community is enshrined in Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). At its heart it is about ensuring that disabled people have the same choice and control over their lives as non-disabled people.

This webinar will inform you of our work to promote and protect the right to independent living. This webinar is for disabled people’s organisations and other civil society organisations with an interest in disability rights. It will include:

  • An introduction to the right to live independently as part of the community.
  • A summary of the EHRC’s work on this right, including the findings of our recent policy paper.
  • Information about opportunities for how you can promote and protect disability rights.
  • How our human rights tracker can support your work on disability rights.

Families of persons with special needs are often unaware of the various housing options and in-home supports which enable their loved one to live independently.

This workshop will discuss how to use your private resources to partner with government benefits and agencies to enable families to best plan for their dependent’s future. We’ll explore alternatives to the traditional ‘provider based’ group homes and congregate care settings that were, up until recent years, the only options available.

Changes in Federal Home and Community Based Services (HC) housing policies have made it possible for persons with special needs to have housing options similar to those persons without disabilities.

The funds we will raise through The Golden Age of Giving Galawill support Connections for Independent Living, a Northern Colorado non-profit organization. At Connections, we strive to promote independence and equality for people with disabilities in Weld County. Our mission is to promote the full inclusion and integration of people with all types of disabilities into all levels of society. We challenge barriers, both physical and attitudinal, which restrict the rights and personal development opportunities of people with disabilities.

Our Golden Age of Giving Gala will help fund our programs and support groups all year around. We provide support groups ranging from our Veterans support group to our TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) support group. By supporting Connections, you are supporting over 900 Weld County residents with disabilities we served in 2017.

Independent Living Expo 2018, on Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at the Salem Civic Center, is a FREE day of seeing, touching, trying and learning about the different types of assistive technology (AT) that can be used to help a person with a disability be independent. All people use some sort of technology but for people with disabilities AT provides equal access and helps them to perform functions that can be difficult or impossible. Types of AT include augmentative communication devices, Bluetooth, phone apps, screen readers, wearable AT, environmental and vehicle modifications, computer software, self-care items and more.

Our hope is to bring information about services and devices together under one roof for people with disabilities, their families, caregivers, service providers and others to see, feel, try and learn how AT can support independent living. Independent Living Expo 2018 is being organized by the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center. For more information, email [email protected], call 540-341-1231 or visit www.brilc.org
