Understanding and unpicking the impact of Dyslexia for students on programmes leading to professional qualification

About the event: Dyslexia is defined as ‘a specific learning difficulty that mainly affects the development of literacy and language related skills’ (British Dyslexia Association 2020). Acknowledged as a specific learning difficulty, dyslexia can impact on everyone, including of course, academics and students. In addition to being the most common self-reported disability amongst undergraduates, dyslexia is also the most common disability that will be encountered in the workplace, meaning for a programme such as social work leading to a professional qualification, support for students is key to enable a successful completion of the programme and future longevity of career.

Who the event is aimed at: Open to all.

What you will gain from attending: In this session Dr Valerie Gant (Senior Lecturer in Social Work) and Michael Hewson (University of Chester Professional Doctoral Student, and qualified Social Worker) discuss challenges in relation to the impact of dyslexia. Drawing on his experiences as a student with dyslexia Michael talks about strategies he utilised and how having this diagnosis has inspired him to find out more, research, write and publish in this area.
