The Learning Disabilities Association of Ottawa-Carleton (LDAO-C) is pleased to present two special events with Dr. Leonard Sax, taking place on October 25 and 26, 2019, in celebration of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. "Instagram Ate My Daughter, and My Son Won't Stop Playing Fortnite"

The current obsession with the Internet, video games and social media is having a significant impact on how our children are responding to education, forming relationships, and developing the skills required to survive in society at large. Parents are frequently confused when it comes to how much screen time is too much, which video games are acceptable and which are harmful, and where boundaries need to be drawn and upheld. Dr. Sax will share his knowledge about these issues and offer strategies that help parents and educators understand and successfully navigate these frequently unfamiliar waters.

BOYS ADRIFT: The 5 Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men

Across Ontario and across Canada, there is a growing gender gap in every demographic group, with the current generation of boys falling farther and farther behind girls, being less likely to earn good marks at school, less likely to attend university much less graduate, and less likely to do well in their first few years in the workplace. Dr. Sax describes the factors driving this phenomenon and shares concrete strategies which parents and educators have successfully deployed to re-engage boys in school and the real world.
About Dr. Leonard Sax:
Leonard Sax MD PhD graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at the age of 19, and then went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both a PhD in psychology, and an MD. For 19 years, Dr. Sax was a practicing family physician in Maryland, and now sees patients in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He is the bestselling author of Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift, Girls on the Edge, and The Collapse of Parenting. Dr. Sax is frequently invited to speak on issues of child and adolescent development in the United States and Canada, and around the world.
