Students with dyslexia pose a challenge to educators. They are smart and able, but their struggle to master reading and spelling persists from year to year.
Dyslexia BC and the Learning Disabilities Association Fraser South Chapter ( LDAFS) are happy to bring Dr. Kelli Sandman-Hurley and Tracy Block-Zaretsky, the co-founders of the Dyslexia Training Institute to BC for an online Educator Training session on October 22, 2021. Just in time for Dyslexia Awareness Month!
What these students usually need is an approach to the teaching of reading and spelling that is structured, explicit and multisensory. This workshop will include a description and examples of what a structured literacy approach can look like in a classroom environment and why it is important. Structured Literacy(SL) will be compared to Balanced Literacy, and the differences will be identified. Along with a discussion about why SL might be more effective, which will be supported by examples. We will also discuss the importance of early screening and identification and how this can happen in the general education classroom. Lastly, but more importantly, participants will walk away with strategies and ideas they can implement in their classroom.
