Orléans, March 28, 2018 — The Coalition des familles francophones d’Ottawa (CFFO) launched a Housing Transition Guide this week over the course of two meetings with families and social workers of the Ottawa region.
Entitled Moving to a Place of my Own!, the Guide aims to encourage the independence of people with developmental disabilities in their search for support and affordable housing. It is the result of a collaborative initiative over a 22-month period.
Available in both paper and electronic form, the Guide is a simple and practical tool that lists and details the best practices, innovative solutions and available resources that support a transition to housing for individuals and their families. It is of interest to loved ones and caregivers living in the Ottawa region who would like to plan for a transition toward a new, person-centered living environment.
"Finding safe and affordable housing is a big challenge for families," says Project Director Serge Lavoie. They have expressed the need for information on services and on concrete ways to help them in the planning stages of a move, and our project is a direct response to this need. "
The Guide has been developed in collaboration with people living with developmental disabilities, and it also meets the need of Francophone families to access resources that correspond to the wishes of the people themselves.
CFFO President Mouna Saim-Al-Dahr adds, "Living “in one's own place" is an achievable goal for many people living with developmental disabilities, provided they can find support and resources in making a move. The Coalition is pleased to have led this project with its partners to help families and foster inclusion in our community."
