Province celebrates Pride weekend with plans for human rights commission

After 16 years, the BC Human Rights Commission will be reinstated. It will be the only Human Rights Commission in North America that is completely independent of government.  The reinstatement of the Commission is intended to give voice to equity seeking groups whose human rights, as set out in the BC Human Rights Code, have been violated. Individuals who live with disabilities have an equal right to access education and employment and should not be subject to discrimination based on their disability. Therefore, I am pleased to hear that BC has stepped up to the plate by providing an avenue for accountability in times when basic human rights have been compromised.  I hope that as a province and a community that we continue to value the importance of ensuring that human rights are defended and protected.
