CWDO's Final Report on Disability and Employment
All six reports can be accessed from the CWDO front page at www.CWDO.org. A plain language version of the summary report will be on our website shortly.
To address attitudinal barriers, we recommend:
- Employment service providers and employers should promote increased contact between disabled and non-disabled people in the workplace.
- Focusing efforts on students and youth to prevent negative stereotypes and myths about people with disabilities.
- Reforming evaluation and accountability measures for employment service provision to focus on job quality and person-job fit.
To address economic barriers, we recommend:
- Requiring large employers to have a centralized accommodation fund using the Ontario Public Service accommodation fund as an exemplar.
- Enhancing existing services and supports to promote self-employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for people with disabilities.
To address accessibility barriers, we recommend:
- Ensuring accessible transportation is available at a level to enable people with disabilities to work without excessively long rides, or exorbitant costs to individuals.
- Requiring trauma informed service provision by government program caseworkers and service providers.
Please read our reports and let us know what you think CWDO should do next to help people with disabilities obtain meaningful employment that truly matches their skills and abilities.
