Historically, people with I/DD have been viewed as asexual and deviant. This viewpoint is not surprising given the societal exclusion and marginalization many in the community have and continue to experience. For too long, adults with I/DD have been denied life experiences that are afforded to people who do not have developmental disabilities. This violates their human rights. This includes having intimate relationships, self-pleasuring, and sexual partners. Like most adults, people with I/DD want to establish intimate relationships and engage in sexual activities. State laws require that both parties are consenting when sexual interactions occur.

This two-day workshop will offer a unique opportunity for professionals to learn practical strategies for supporting people with I/DD in exploring, learning, and safely expressing themselves social-sexually. Using a strength-based approach, our experts will share valuable insights that will address negative mindsets, unconscious biases, and dispel myths. This all begins with a comprehensive agency policy. Attendees will receive training on the YAI policies, conducting sexual consent assessments using the YAI Consent Tool, and obtain critical skills essential to becoming social-sexual educators. This workshop will focus on a number of skill areas that can be used in clinical practice, the classroom, a person’s home, and an agency at large. Learn skills to better support adults with I/DD in making informed decisions about social-sexual issues that will ultimately enrich their quality of life.

This experiential two-day workshop will explore the supports that are needed to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in understanding and participating in their end-of-life planning process. It will dispel commonly held myths about the abilities of people with IDD in understanding their rights to information when dealing with their own mortality or the loss of a loved one.

The workshop will provide an overview of the forms and processes used to assist a person in planning for his/her end-of-life care. A comparative analysis of the plethora of religions and their practices for death and mourning will be explored. Commonalities and differences involved in the handling of this time of life will be highlighted. It will also increase clinicians’ and support professionals’ knowledge, which is valuable while assisting others in following the rituals associated with their spiritual practice. Though the focus is on people with IDD, techniques learned can be readily used to support anyone in a variety of treatment locations.

At the end of this course, attendees will:

  • Understand the biopsychosocial process and needs of the dying person and effectively provide supports needed
  • Identify various ways that grief can manifest, particularly with people with I/DD
  • Learn tips on setting up a Grief Support Team
  • Understand, support, and teach caregivers how to provide support, while grieving themselves
