An overview of techniques, that are naturally occurring linguistic features used by native signers of American Sign Language, will make this a primarily hands-on interactive practice workshop for Press Conference interpreters. This workshop clarifies that many of these techniques, often thought to have been developed by interpreters, are actually a vital part of ASL.
Due to the language differences in American Sign Language and spoken English, these techniques, such as expansion, "space, pace, and place", compacting, cause and effect structures, ground and figure, and dropping form, must be utilized to make implicit information explicit, organize for content relevance, and to clarify the goal or intent of the message.
Adequate instruction in these techniques helps signers/interpreters develop efficient and inclusive ASL skills that demonstrate natural phrasing, correct grammatical structures, and limit errors in production while interpreting the message. The goal of this workshop is to expose sign language interpreters to the various techniques and encourage them to incorporate necessary techniques into their platform interpreting product
