Stigma, discrimination, and other factors put lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQIA+) young people at increased risk for negative health outcomes.
In this two-hour, live, interactive webinar healthcare providers and health center staff will learn affirming, trauma-informed, inclusive care practices to address health issues faced by LGBTQIA+ youth with a focus on mental health. During the webinar, a health educator and youth co-facilitator will cover practical strategies for collecting sexual orientation and gender identity information, discussing LGBTQIA+ identities in affirming ways, screening for mental health concerns with LGBTQIA+ adolescents in mind, specific considerations for trans and non-binary patients in a mental health crisis, and making LGBTQIA+ affirming referrals for mental healthcare. Case studies include unique considerations for racially profiled, criminalized, and undocumented patients. For those who would like an overview, a pre-training video will be provided to explain LGBTQIA+ terminology.
This training is presented by the Community Health Access Initiative (CHAI). Our training was developed by a coalition of health care providers, community organizations, youth, and university experts brought together by the Resilience + Resistance Collective within the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. CHAI is funded by UMHS Community Health Services.
All health care providers and health center staff in Washtenaw County are invited to participate! We look forward to working together to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth!
Participants will receive additional information, including a link to the Zoom webinar prior to the training.
