Ideal, but not a prerequisite for staff who attended “Understanding the effects of trauma in persons with an intellectual/developmental disability”
Now that we have a foundation and understanding on what Trauma Informed Care entails, we are ready for what we call the “NOW WHAT” phase. This workshop is designed to provide idea strategies, and policies that can be implemented at your agency to improve the quality of services we provide to adults and children with intellectual/developmental disabilities, based on Trauma Informed Care.
What is Trauma Informed Care (TIC)?
Trauma Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. TIC also emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both consumers and providers, and helps survivors rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.
How can TIC assist when working with adults and children with an intellectual or developmental disability?
Persons with intellectual disabilities are often exposed to trauma during their lifetime. Common exposure is physical, sexual, verbal abuse, neglect or financial exploitation. The impact of violence and trauma varies — some victims may emerge from the experience without major problems, while others may suffer long-term devastating effects. This workshop will focus on types of trauma, how to address trauma, implications of trauma when working with persons with intellectual/developmental disabilities, recovery, and tools/resources.
