Trauma Centered Behavioral Approaches to Intellectual Disability Services

Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 9 AM - 3 PM EDT

Presenter: Robert Bowen

This is a critical training for Behaviorists, Clinicians, Clinical Administrators, and Program Managers working with individuals served in the Intellectual Disability system who have high risk or problematic behaviors.

New Hampshire was the first state to close down its school for the disabled in the United States. People with intellectual disabilities in New Hampshire are served in communities and in many ways, have greater options for independence than ever before. In spite of this, trauma as a significant factor in community supports, is often overlooked and unaddressed. Many of our clients who have the highest rates of crisis, emergency room visits and behavior that is harmful to themselves and or others have developmental histories marked by serious and often profound trauma. Behavioral programs and services are the most frequently utilized clinical services for people with these types of struggles in the ID system, yet their trauma histories are often not assessed.

This training will focus on how to take a trauma centered approach to providing community based services for people with intellectual disabilities who have complex and often difficult presentations. Topics covered will include:

  • Identifying and assessing trauma and it’s impact on current functioning

  • Designing and implementing trauma centered behavior plans

  • Implementing trauma centered training and supports for staff and caregivers working with this population

Cost: $25.00 per person for training, refreshments and lunch as training has been grant assisted!
