The Need for Financial Literacy in Special Education

Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 1 PM - 2:15 PM EDT

For decades, people with disabilities couldn't have over $2,000 or they'd lose government benefits. This functionally forced many into poverty. Thankfully, there's another option now. They can save in an Oregon ABLE Savings Plan account and keep their benefits.

However, people with intellectual/developmental disabilities weren’t taught financial skills because they weren’t expected to need them. It’s time that changed.

Oregon’s Transition Network and Oregon ABLE have been working with Financial Beginnings Oregon to make financial education accessible for young adults with disabilities. We’ll talk about the need for financial literacy in the disability community and what we’re doing to change it.
