At our fourth meeting, we’ll be exploring stories and experiences of neurodiversity in the healthcare profession.
"Neurodiversity refers to varied ways in which the brain processes information, and covers dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)." - Alison Moore
We’ll be looking at chapter 2 of ‘Autism in Heels’ by Jenifer Cook O’Toole (2018), who was diagnosed with Asperger’s at age thirty-five. The chapter, ‘Camouflage: Hidden in plain Sight’ talks about how symptoms of Asperger’s in women are often missed due to ‘masking’ - a technique in which one conforms to social ‘norms’.
We’ll also be chatting with Dr. Rachael Major, nurse and educator who has conducted research into neurodiversity in nursing and Fraser Smith, who has over 20 years of experience in elderly and learning disabilities care.
Sign up to attend, and we'll circulate this chapter in advance, which we encourage you to read if you have the time. You’re welcome to come along and discuss even if you don’t have time to read the chapter.
