She has a Master’s Degree in Cognition and Neuroscience from the School of Be-havioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas and a Bachelor of Science De-gree in Psychology from Southern Methodist University.
Nelly is the founder of Brain Change 101, a passionate advocate for people living with demen-tia and their care partners, and a proud active member of the Alzheimer’s Association’s Speak-ers Bureau.
Brain Change 101 is a nonprofit organization which provides education, training, and emotion al support for families living with dementia by conducting support group meetings, public and private seminars and other speaking engagements in English and Spanish.
BC101’s sessions are designed to help family members and the general public understand how neuro degenerative disorders like the ones that cause dementia affect a person's brain, body chemistry and, consequently, their emotions and behavior. During these sessions participants are encouraged to engage in educational activities like role play in order to learn new skills. This practice, combined with educational information, helps attendees build a strong and reliable “tool kit” they can use to manage day to day interactions and/or to de-escalate difficult situa-tions.
