When thinking of disability inclusion, people mostly picture infrastructural accessibility, such as: step-free access, accessible lifts, accessible toilets, etc. These are all part of key components of a modern inclusive society.
Ironically, many disabled people continue facing ableism and disablism even when accessing environments that have been newly refurbished, and built in accordance with the Equality Act 2010. These experiences frequently end up sparking uncomfortable confrontations and putting disabled people in difficult positions of having to justify their rights to use spaces that have been designed purposely to welcome the disabled community. Sadly, these incidents cause further divisions instead of promoting inclusion.
Cultural barriers are deeply rooted in our society, and inevitably this affects our LGBTQ+ community. These cultural barriers are caused by lack of awareness, lack of knowledge, general confusion, prejudice, and mostly - poor common sense.
Join our second 'dis-section' event on Zoom. With a line-up of incredible panellists we will reflect about what more can be done to improve disability inclusive in mainstream LGBTQ+ community.
'Dis-section' is a safe digital space where we converse openly, honestly and respectfully, about topics that are often not talked about in wider LGBTQ+ society.
BSL interpreter and live captions will be available.
