Looking Back

"The Handicapped" is an article written by a disabled man over a hundred years ago, for The Atlantic. The language is old-fashioned and by today's standards, perhaps even offensive, but it is quite an eye-opening read.

As you read this 1911 essay, take note of what has changed and what remains the same. For example:

"The doors of the deformed man are always locked, and the key is on the outside. He may have treasures of charm inside, but they will never be revealed unless the person outside cooperates with him in unlocking the door."

The Guardian recently profiled this as part of their series on disability and inequality. Thanks to Ing Wong-Ward for sharing this article.
