For managers and staff across LLR that would like to explore their own and their service’s approach to disability, share good practice and plan simple changes.
This course is designed to get participants thinking about: What do we mean by disability? And from what perspective do we view disability? Changing our perspective can result in different ways to develop our services and different approaches to how we communicate.
To examine the differences between the ‘medical model’ of disability and the ‘social model’ of disability.
- To identify what we mean by a ‘hidden disability’. Is this term helpful? What every day struggles might someone with a ‘hidden disability’ have?
- Gain an insight into the perspective of those with a disability – how do they feel and how do they react?
- Recognise features of service delivery that can put those with a particular characteristic at a disability in accessing the service.
- Explore how we can make communication and environmental changes to promote inclusivity.
- Plan specific improvements to implement.
At the end of the course participants will have gained:
- Increased self-awareness and insight.
- Knowledge of types of disability and different perspectives.
- Ideas and confidence to make changes to working practice.
