Kitchener Disability Day of Mourning 2021

Monday, March 1, 2021 at 5 PM - 7 PM EST

The ninth annual Disability Day of Mourning honours those who have been murdered by family members or caretakers. Here in Kitchener, we would also like to honour those lost to suicide, overdose, medical neglect, and other deadly results of ableism. Please join in this local virtual vigil to celebrate the lives of those lost, support each other in grief, and plan together for a future in which everyone understands that a disabled life is a life worth living.

True community - by and for disabled individuals - is hard to come by in Kitchener-Waterloo, and it is my hope that this vigil can also serve as a connection point. A network of disabled friends and contacts, one not mediated or controlled by non-disabled caregivers or service providers, is key to not only our sense of identity - but our health and our very survival.

This event will be held virtually on Zoom. The link will be emailed out one day in advance to those who have registered via Eventbrite. If Eventbrite registration is not an option, you may also view the event in real time via Facebook Live.

Accessibility: CART is currently being arranged for this event. If you need any additional accommodations, or you encounter difficulties with registration, please contact: [email protected]. This is a low-resourced event, but I would be glad to negotiate for accommodations and supports to the best of my ability.
