A Fresh New Spin On UK Resources

Welcome back to the audacious Aspie! Today, we will be looking at a resource that takes umbrance with how resources like the National Autistic Society shine the spotlight on certain age groups with autism, while leaving others in the dark. Now, this group met some...rough times recently, and had to shut down. But they are back with both a mission and a message. So, let's go ahead and meet them shall we? As usual, please keep all valuables and limbs inside the ride at all times, because we’re about to go through a roller coaster (of emotions).

Meet, Dimensions For Autism (DFA), as stated above they already had to shut down. But this group must have seen the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, because they...raised themselves from the ashes! Eh!? Eh? Aaannyway they are back with both a twitter page and a facebook page, talk about not wasting time on social media. Who are the DFA? They are an autism advocate group within the UK, that provides support and help for autistic people of all ages. Emphasis on the “all ages” part.

Fair Fairground Ferris Wheel Carousel

It’s like the “you must be this tall to ride” kind of rules for fairs. But with age, and otherway around.

See, over there in the UK (or over here, if you’re reading it from the UK) the DFA see a problem with some of the legislation concerning autism. Namely, they are child-focused, mostly ignoring the autistic adult population. Now, there are some legislation passed to help autistic adults, like the Autism Act, but no one enforces it as far as anyone knows, or at least I’ve been told. Here is the link to check it out yourself: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2009/15/contents. If you're also looking for the twitter and facebook pages of DFA, the links can be found here. Twitter: https://twitter.com/DimensionsFA. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dimensionsforautism/.

Well, that’s it for this post. We’ll continue to discover more resources in the UK and Ireland concerning autism. But what an interesting pair of supports we found already, both national and grass roots. Perhaps we might even look into the legislation that was mentioned. Who knows? One thing is for certain though, there will be another post. And another, and another. Until than, this continues to be, the Audacious Aspie.
