FIU Embrace International Day of Persons with Disabilities Panel Discussion

Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 11 AM - 1 PM EST

Description

Following FIU Embrace’s Day of Persons with Disabilities Design Thinking Session, university change makers, students, and staff have an opportunity to participate in this event and listen to feedback from our Panther community about the accessibility issues discovered during Design Thinking.

December 3rd is the United Nation’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year’s theme is: Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. Persons with disabilities remain too often excluded from the design, planning and implementation of policies and programs that have an impact on our community. To overcome this challenge, the path towards inclusive, accessible, usable facilities, technologies, infrastructure, services and products must be ensured by, for and with persons with disabilities.

We strive to do more than just spread awareness with these events, we hope to cultivate a culture of community, responsibility, transparency, and accountability. Evidence and experience shows that when barriers to their inclusion are removed and persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in societal life, their entire community benefits. Barriers faced by persons with disabilities are, therefore, a detriment to society as a whole, and accessibility is necessary to achieve progress and development for all.

These series of events are the start of a movement to remove the barriers to inclusion at FIU for persons with disabilities, so that we may all be empowered to participate fully in societal life.

We invite participants to listen to the feedback from our Panther community and discuss the opportunities for innovation. Join our Provost and leadership in discussing the path forward.

*Lunch will be provided

Who should join?

Open to all students and staff a part of the FIU community. We encourage students from different backgrounds such as tech, computer science, engineering, business, public health, and students with disabilities and more to radically collaborate with a diverse group of people.
