Improving Cooperation 2: Collaborating with Parents to Address Common Behavior Issues

Collaboration with parents and other team members to reduce problem behavior is essential to effective treatment. This lunchtime workshop provides evidence based methods for analyzing and treating common behavior problems. Video examples will be used to illustrate the function of common behaviors. Strategies to prevent problem behavior, ensure that problem behavior is not accidentally reinforced, and methods for teaching and strengthening appropriate replacement behaviors will be addressed. Specific protocols will be presented via video and practiced via role play to effectively manage situations that occur frequently during therapy such as crying/fussing/whining to gain access to items/people/activities, engaging in problem behavior to escape/delay tasks, engaging in problem behavior when toys or activities are interrupted, and engaging in problem behavior when told “no” or asked to wait. The special issue of dealing with self-stimulatory behavior in the population of children with autism will also be addressed. Simple self-scoring lists for parent and teacher training will also be provided. Leave with “on the spot” strategies to reduce problem behavior.

Participants who attend this workshop will be able to:

1. Identify common functions of problem behavior

2. Use a simple task analysis to teach and self-score for 3 on the spot behavior intervention strategies.
