Early Literacy Evidence-Based Practices to Improve Outcomes for All

Thursday, December 3, 2020 at 3 PM - 4 PM EST

Early Literacy Evidence-Based Practices to Improve Outcomes for All including Key Strategies for Children with Disabilities.

The Community of Practice will focus on literacy instruction that can benefit all learners grades K-3 with special emphasis on instructional strategies and resources designed for struggling learners and children with disabilities. The CoP will meet from 2:00-3:00 pm in Zoom.

Early Literacy: Phonological Awareness

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words and to understand that spoken words and syllables consist of sequences of sounds. Instruction in phonological awareness is beneficial for most children and seems critical for others, but the degree of explicitness and the systematic nature of instruction may need to vary according to the learner's skills (Smith, Simmons, & Kameenui, 1998). This CoP will focus on evidence-based practices for supporting ALL students in phonological awareness with an emphasis on intensifying instruction for struggling learners.

Future topics and dates for this year include:

  • Early Literacy: Phonics and Word Study on February 4th
  • Early Literacy: Fluency and Comprehension on May 6th

We look forward to a productive time of shared collaborative learning!
