Disability Consciousness Raising

Thursday, October 15, 2020 at 12 PM - 1 PM PDT

The COVID-19 crisis has further heightened the need, understanding and collective awareness of online remote access to collections for all people—including those with disabilities. This webinar was programmed in response to requests for additional training during last year’s “Visible and Invisible Disabilities” Focus Group hosted by AMIA and the NFPB. In an effort to raise collective awareness around these issues, AMIA is delighted to have Drs. Raphael Raphael and Tom Conway (of the University of Hawai’i Center on Disability Studies) share their expertise and experience. The hope is that this session can inform our thinking around advocating for universal accessibility, disability rights, as well as inclusion and representation for both our field and the collections we steward.

In short, this introductory session invites audiovisual specialists to interrogate how disability is understood and thought about. Informed by disability studies and the history of disability in visual culture, Drs. Raphael Raphael and Tom Conway invite our profession to consider the impact of how ‘disability’ is defined in the shared spaces. The webinar will conclude with some basic practical strategies to promote accessibility with digital objects and spaces. This conversation around practical strategies will continue and be addressed in more depth in the accompanying panel “Practical Applications for Disabilities Consciousness Raising” on Friday, October 16th from 12pm to 2pm PST (the following day). Both sessions will have ASL interpretation and slide visual description. ASL for this session has been generously provided by University of Hawaii.
