Described Video (also called Audio Description) involves a narrator who describes key visual elements of a movie, documentary or television show that are not part of the script in order to explain what would be missed if it could not be seen. The narration is added to the sound track. This is an excellent way to make media accessible to people with vision impairments. It's also helpful to people who don't have a line of sight to the TV - for example while cooking or doing laundry.
Depending on your television service provider, you access DV in different ways. Accessible Media Inc. (AMI) lists access information for Bell, Cogeco, Rogers, Shaw, Telus and several other television service providers. AMI believes in an inclusive society in which media is accessible to all Canadians and all of AMI's programs are accessible. Here is AMI's Channel Guide.
The Audio Description Project has compiled a comprehensive list of described DVD and streaming titles.
