More about this Event

The Canadian Human Rights Commission is Canada’s national human rights watchdog. Last year, we were given a new responsibility to monitor the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) here in Canada.

We want to get this right. That means we need to hear from YOU.

We want to engage with as wide a range of rights holders from across Canada to hear diverse lived experiences and opinions on this important topic.

Our first step was to launch a survey over the summer. By the time the survey closed, we had heard from almost 3,000 people, including people with disabilities and organizations that advocate on their behalf. We are so grateful to all those who participated. This feedback is invaluable to helping Canada better protect the rights of people with disabilities.

But there are many others we still need to hear from. We want to ensure that we have as diverse a perspective as possible. Your feedback will help us know where to focus our work in this important new role. So if you haven’t had a chance to have your voice heard, there is still a way to have your say!

These online dialogue sessions will focus on key questions from our summer survey that will be discussed in small groups. The questions include:

1) how best to engage people with disabilities in our new monitoring role; and

2) what issues or areas of concern our monitoring work should focus on.

We will be providing honorariums to those who are participating in a personal capacity (i.e. not participating on behalf of an organization). CART captioning and ASL will be made available.

Please note that each session is limited to a maximum number of participants to ensure that we are able to have a meaningful conversation. In addition, if you are unable to register at this time, please note that there will be other opportunities to engage as we continue with this work.

Please also note that these sessions will not be recorded. However, we will be taking notes during the sessions so we can capture your ideas to inform our monitoring work. When we share what we learned from these sessions, no one will be identified, and no one will know this information was collected from you.

Thank you, and we look forward to your ideas!
