11:00 am MST - Welcome and Introduction
11:05 am MST - Session 1: Dr. Charl Els (Post-traumatic Stress Injury - Diagnosis, Care, and Treatment)
- Trauma is ubiquitous. Following exposure to traumatic adult life events, a psychological injury / traumatic stress injury may ensue, which may take the form of a number of diagnosable psychiatric illnesses. This session will focus on the assessment, care, and treatment of traumatic psychological injury, including results of early interviews with national stakeholders about related experiences and challenges.
12:00 pm MST - Session 2: Dr. Doug Gross (Virtual Care in a Rehabilitation setting - Does it work?)
- The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in dramatic changes to health care to avoid spread of the novel coronavirus, including increased use of virtual care and telehealth. This presentation will review research on the effectiveness of virtual care generally and within workers’ compensation settings.
1:00 pm MST - Session 3: Dr. Rob Tanguay (Opioids and Function: Treating Distress vs Pain)
- Rehabilitation for Return to Work often include medications. Some of these medications, including opioids, may not have strong evidence and may be impacting function and pain outcomes. We will review the mechanisms of pain, emotion, and cognition and how medications may be helpful or harmful in supporting a positive return to work.
