So Wait, We’re Not All Autistic?

Welcome back to the Audacious Aspie! Today, we are going to continue looking into the the article “is everyone ‘a little autistic”? This time, we get to the part of the article that asks the question “Maybe not everyone is a little autistic?” It may seem like a contradictory thing for the writer of the article to do, like if Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged purporting capitalism in the first half of the book, than asked “Maybe socialism is best? (cue die-hard conservatives and republicans having a heart attack). But nonetheless, let’s give the writer the benefit of the doubt eh?

Before you put him/her in the middle of the doubting circle, causing him/her to question everything he/she has believed in, give em a chance will yeah?

Why might not everyone be a little bit autistic? For one thing, the author mentions that just because everyone gets stressed, anxious and all that, does not mean that everyone has autism/aspergers. Both have WAY more things to do than just getting stressed, as anyone who has one/other, or worked extensively with them will tell you. The author notes that to believe otherwise “is a diminishing thing to say, particularly to autistic people” (Paragrtaph 5).

Rather than seeing us as a full, fleshed out character in a futuristic dystopian world where we are persistently told to act like the dominant species, and await a “cure”, that will “free” us from our “issue”. We will instead be seen as the crazy sidekick who sacrifices him/herself in every said dystopian movie. Think of any crazy side kick in some action films or horror movies or the like who dies to further the heroes cause. Got the person in mind? Yeah, THAT guy, imagine being seen as THAT guy all the time.

Partnership Connectedness Personal BusinessmenOnce the writers killed off the sidekick, they would have the hero face the monster alone, with no help, only his wits. And maybe a weapon. Maybe. Or just his testosterone, depending on age of movie.

But let's delve into the dystopian world, an alternate earth, as described by the author. A world where everyone was just a little bit autistic:There would be no Salvation Army bell ringers (the author claims they would be illegal, but that may be a bit much). Wanna go to a club and dance? Hope you like dancing literally in the dark, because there would be no strobe lights (maybe industrial lights though, but not sure if you’d wanna dance under those). Neither, so the author claims, would fluorescent lights, sirens, shirt tags and the like exist (mind you, not sure why any other loud noise would be needed at dance clubs. It’s not like the music isn't loud enough as it is. Must be to keep the patrons awake and not nodding off while dancing literally the night away).

Will, that’s it for this week. Next week we will continue looking into this very interesting topic, see if we can't discover the truth if everyone truly is autistic or not. Some of you might already have come to a conclusion one way or another, so what do you think? Is everyone autistic? Until next time, this continues to be, the Audacious Aspie.
