Ontario Proposes New Budget

The Wynne government presented its proposed pre-election budget which includes initiatives for seniors (Pharma-care, home care, snow shoveling), mental health services, services for students with disabilities and people with developmental disabilities. Initiatives also include enhancements to social assistance programs which will provide for a 3% annual increase.

But there is a lot that is not stated in the budget, according to the AODA Alliance. The two things that are most strikingly missing from the Budget are these:

First, there is no new plan, nor new budget associated with it, to ensure that Ontario reaches full accessibility for people with disabilities by 2025.

Second, there is nothing in the budget that would ensure that people with disabilities will be able to equally share in several of the important new initiatives that the Budget announces. Will people with disabilities and their families be able to fully access and use services associated with the following initiatives?

  • Pre-school day care
  • School, college and university buildings
  • Economic development and job creation
  • New infrastructure, including public transit
  • New and expanded hospitals
  • Accessible housing
  • Accessible prescription labels
