About this Event
Workshop for parents of children in grades K-12 who are struggling with a language-based learning disorder — including challenges with listening, speaking, reading, writing, spelling and mathematics.
The symposium brings together experts from the fields of advocacy, school placement, school admissions, and special education law to provide information and practical tools for navigating school supports.

Keynote: Nick Kenner | 9:15am
Kenner is the Founder & CEO of Just Salad, a fast-casual concept restaurant that launched in 2006 with a mission to cultivate healthier lifestyles by serving real food at an affordable price. Kenner, who was diagnosed with a learning disability in Kindergarten, is a 2003 Colgate University graduate and proud alumnus of Stephen Gaynor School and Columbia Prep.

This panel will provide parents with information about the tools that are used to determine whether or not a child has an LD, and cover questions regarding diagnostic criteria for learning disorders and different types of evaluations – both in-school and private.

This panel will provide parents with information about the available resources that are used to treat LDs, including school based supports (e.g. resource room, SEITs, SETTs), reading supports, writing supports and mathematics supports.

This panel will provide parents with access to various attorneys who will discuss aspects of the legal process in special education, including how and when to hire an attorney to assist with public services and school placement matters.
