Mental Health and I/DD- The Other Dual Diagnosis
Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 9 AM - 5 PM EST

Supporting people with a dual diagnosis of MH/IDD

Dual diagnosis is a term applied to the co-existence of the symptoms of both intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) and mental health problems. People with I/DD experience the same types of psychiatric disorders as people who do not have an intellectual/ developmental disability. The appearance of the symptoms may be altered, expressive communication may be in varied forms and techniques and strategies will need to be adapted to better support processing of information. This seminar is designed to increase the social worker’s knowledge and understanding about clients with co-occurring diagnoses of mental illness and intellectual/developmental disability. Barriers to effective treatment will be explored. Attendees will identify clinical issues and explore effective social work interventions to address them. This seminar will also provide social work clinicians with some concrete ideas on how to adapt and supplement known therapeutic techniques. This can mean the difference between helping your client to merely survive and helping them to lead a productive, meaningful, satisfying, and joyful life. 7 CE contact hours
