Presenter: Peter DellaBella, M.D.

Dr. DellaBella is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist in private practice in Montclair and Manhattan, where he works with a group of multidisciplinary autism specialists. He has been on the teaching faculty at NYU since the 1990s and has taught various permutations of today's talk at NYU and other medical facilities throughout the city. For many years he was the Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director at the YAI National Institute for People with Disabilities in NYC where he also ran the clinical portion of an autism fellowship with Mount Sinai.

Program Narrative:

Review of current medical thinking involving the causes and treatment of people with autism." This will include the genetic underpinnings of autism and addressing and demythologizing current public controversies with autism." The talk will also provide a comprehensive approach to the pervasive nature of autism symptoms and touch on the roles of a broad range of health, educational, and community providers to construct a network of care.

Learning Objectives:

1. The participants shall be able to distinguish among commonly used and misused terms in the identification of people with ASD. For example: ASD, PDD, Aspergers, Autism, HFA, NVLD.

2. The participants will be able to understand current hypotheses about the genetic underpinnings of autism.

3. The participants will be able to list 3 aspects of autism which confer higher vulnerability for people on the spectrum towards mistreatment by others.

4 .The participants will be able to articulate key elements of a broad-based and comprehensive treatment approach for people with ASD.

5 .The participants will be able to direct people in the community to several community-based supports for people with autism and their families.
